Mridula Purohit an intellectual from Jaipur,is mathametical scholar chose the difficult path but achieved with her passion and hardwork.
"Two roads diverged in a wood, and Mridula purohit took the one that is less traveled by,
Which made all the difference."
For Dr. Mridula, that road was the one which gives cold sweat to countless souls - that less traveled road was “Mathematics”. Being born in a family of accomplished doctors and engineers, it looked like science would be her default career choice. But fate had a way of working out its own plans.
Dr. Mridula grew up in a traditional, but progressive joint family in Jaipur, full of cousins, uncles and aunts, and in that setup where its the norm for the older cousins to help the younger ones in studies, it wasn’t long before she became the person teaching to all her younger siblings with maths. When she realised her passion lied in numbers, she decided to take maths for higher studies in school, at a time when there were hardly any teachers for higher classes. She derived her courage in chasing after her passion from her mother, who she attributes as
an endless source of positivity. Choosing such an
unconventional subject at the time came with its own challenges, but her father, a civil engineer, took it upon himself to help her as much as he could.
The support spurred her to fly high on her passion for maths, and she completed her PhD in 2000,but her hunger for acquiring and spreading knowledge just didn’t stop there. Till date she has written six books and 24 research papers on national and international journals, and supervised research scholars. Because of her own childhood experiences with teaching, she realised it was the perfect opportunity for her to make a difference in lives of future talent, by nurturing the youth in Mathematics. She currently holds the position of associate Dean and Head of Department of Mathematics at Vivekananda Global University, Jaipur.
It has been an adventurous journey, taking on additional roles and responsibilities at her university, and has supervised various research projects. Some might think Dr. Mridula has it all in her life – a successful career, loving family, and a growing generation of students for whom she isn’t just professor but a role model. But she knows at the core of all this are the challenges all women faces in workplace, hence she also took up the role of Head of the Women’s cell at VGU. Despite her academic side, people are usually pleasantly surprised when she coordinates the annual university fests with equal zest.
So what advice can she give to young girls who are faced with difficult choices? “Follow your passion, with consistent effort. Rest everything has a way of falling into place, just like a mathematical equation”-she quips, with
a smile her innumerable students and staff have come to associate with her.
